2017 Life Strategy Conference

Fall 2017
Tucson, Arizona

Exploring the Intersection of Wealth Management and the Science of Happiness

Maximizing the amount of happiness and fulfillment you experience in your life is a noble endeavor. Determining the levers that have the most meaningful impact towards reaching this objective, however, can be very challenging.  This conference is designed to help illuminate some of these levers and provide practical, actionable advice to help you unlock a more strategic approach to living your life in harmony with your values and goals.

The 2017 Life Strategy Conference will provide attendees with the following:

  • The latest academic insights from the field of The Science of Happiness
  • A keen understanding of the role fear plays in your approach to money and investing
  • A financial planning process designed to help you live your life in harmony with what you value most

2016 Agenda

9:00-9:30am: Breakfast

9:30-9:45am: Welcome and Warm-up Meditation

Kristin Keffeler will help us kick off the day with a quick primer on meditation and an exercise designed to help us star the day off in the optimal state of mind.

9:45-10:45am: Why Should We Care About Happiness?

Sonja Lyubomirsky, PhD

Department of Psychology, UC Riverside

Happiness not only feels good; it is good. Relative to their less happy peers, happy people are more creative, productive, and helpful, have more stable marriages, and boast stronger immune systems. Until recently, however, many scientists were pessimistic about the very notion that happiness can be lastingly increased.  In this talk, I will describe the ideas and findings from my two books, The How of Happiness and The Myths of Happiness, debunking the misconceptions that we have about happiness.  Drawing on my two decades of research with thousands of participants, I will introduce a self-administered program to boost health, productivity, and happiness in our day-to-day lives by describing a dozen uniquely formulated “happiness strategies” that we can practice on a regular basis.  In sum, emphasizing how much of our happiness is within our control, I will address the scientific “how” of my happiness research, demystifying the many myths that unnecessarily complicate its pursuit.  My findings have significant implications for increasing happiness both at home and in the workplace.

10:45-11:00am: Break

11:00-12:00pm: Enlightened Investing

Bryce D. Skaff

DFA Vice President, Head of Strategic Relationship Group

Life fulfillment is directly impacted by the extent to which we are stressed.  Investing is inherently uncertain and money is the number one stressor—but it doesn’t need to be.  Investors can choose a path riddled with anxiety, feeling like they are playing in a system with the odds stacked against them.  Or they can choose a path, working with an advisor, that allows them to 1) feel empowered and more confident about their long term plan and 2) live in the present with less stress.  That path is not blind.  It’s informed by mountains of scientific evidence about ways to maximize the probability of success.  And it equips people with knowledge and preparation to tune out the “noise” and get through a variety of market environments.  In doing so, the enlightened investor, in working with a firm like TCI, will be able to channel their energy to more important things that have a more measurable impact on happiness.

12:00-12:30pm: Lunch

12:30-1:00pm: Live Improv Performance

Mission Improvable

Resident Comedy Troup at Westside Comedy Theater

It’s now time for us all to wake up and get our juices flowing after that heavy lunch!  The agents of MISSION IMPROVable, who have done thousands of shows around the world, are just a few audience suggestions away from creating a brand new and original production that’s all about whatever we tell them!  It’s like the TV show “Whose Line is it Anyway?” – but there is a bit of a twist.  Just like in the old TV series “Mission Impossible,” the actors in Mission IMPROVable are actually secret agents of comedy.  And we, as their co-agents, will participate in several hilarious theater games or “missions” by yelling out suggestions.  No conference about life strategy and happiness is complete without some well-deserved belly laughs!

1:00 - 1:45pm: What is Enough?

Marc Campbell

TCI Wealth Advisor & Shareholder

Marc will discuss the key variables necessary to build a powerful financial plan that supports your vision.  By understanding your current financial state, as well as your desired future financial state, it is possible to map out a realistic savings and investment plan that maximizes your chances of living your life in harmony with your values and goals.  Aligning your vision with your financial plan is a little-recognized, but incredibly impactful way of activating a deeper sense of meaning and purpose in your life, thereby increasing happiness, and this session will lay out a clear process for achieving this important objective.

1:45-3:15pm: Grace in the Cauldron of Chaos: Creating and Pursuing Your Personal Strategic Vision

Kristin Keffeler

Principal, Illumination360

Living your life in harmony with your goals and values takes ongoing effort, but the reward is a life filled with greater meaning, purpose, and fulfillment.  The first step in this noble pursuit is developing a Personal Strategic Vision for yourself.  By combining innovative thinking from the fields of individual human performance and organizational/family dynamics, we will explore the key questions at the heart of any successful personal vision, and also discuss the importance of resiliency and adaptability in the process of successfully implementing your vision.

3:15-3:30pm: Closing and Next Steps

We will “bring it home” and share ways you can continue to build an even more strategic approach to living your life in harmony with what you value most.

3:30-5:00pm: Cocktail Hour
